Botox® Cosmetic is an FDA approved medication used for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between patient's eyebrows. In her Portland, OR area practice, Dr. Elisa Burgess offers Botox® Cosmetic injections to patients who wish to relax the signs of aging but in a gentle, less invasive manner. Am I an ideal candidate for Botox® Cosmetic?
Botox® Cosmetic is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the world. Patients often select Botox® Cosmetic as a means to correct frown lines in between the eyebrows (glabellar area) and often practitioners use it for crow’s feet, forehead lines, or for specific areas with excessive sweating. Patients who receive Botox® Cosmetic treatments are usually between 18 and 65 years old. Patients who have an infection at the proposed injection site or have an allergy or hypersensitivity to the botulinum toxin used in Botox® may not be ideal candidates for treatment. What will the Botox® Cosmetic treatment be like?
Prior to the Botox® treatment, the patient and Dr. Burgess will carefully select the injection sites. Through small injections directly into the overactive muscles, Botox® Cosmetic will work to relax the muscles that cause frown lines, while still allowing you to show expression. The procedure take only a few minutes to perform and normally no anesthesia is required. The result is a more rested, youthful appearance that can last three or four months. Usually repeat treatments are required.
What should I expect after my Botox® Cosmetic treatment?
The patient can expect no downtime following Botox® treatment, but should avoid alcohol and remain upright for a few hours. We recommend no massage in the area for the first day. Many patients begin to notice a softening of their wrinkles after four days. Full results may be evaluated at two weeks following the procedure.
Though some side effects, such as bruising, redness, nausea, or headache are possible, the patient should notify Dr. Burgess of any severe or unusual side effects.

Dysport®
Dysport® is an FDA approved medication used to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Since frown lines occur due to facial movements, such as squinting or frowning, they may even develop in younger adults. Through several small injection points, Dysport® blocks the nerve signal that causes the facial muscles to contract, resulting in a smooth, relaxed look. It is used in similar indications, treatment, and recovery as listed above for Botox® Cosmetic but may have slightly different effects. The treatment usually lasts three to four months but some patients have noted a longer time. It usually requires repeat treatments.
During your consultation, Dr. Burgess will assist you in developing an individualized Dotox® cosmetic plan and determine the exact points to inject to provide the most optimal results. The procedure is quick and normally no anesthesia is required. Some discomfort may be experienced at the site of injection, along with possible swelling, redness or bruising. Full results are evaluated at two weeks following the procedure, but many patients begin to notice a softening of their furrows within 4 days.
